Size and fit
Our sizes are UK sizes, 3 to 9. If you already wear a Phelan pair, order the same size.
Because most pairs are made for you, it's worth getting the size right before we cut the leather. Measure your foot against our size guide, or ask us: tell us your usual size and the shoes you wear now, and we'll help you choose.
Made for you: how it works
We're a small factory, not a warehouse. We don't make hundreds of pairs of each style and hope they sell. When your size isn't on the shelf, we make your pair after you order it, in your size, and it takes a few weeks. Nothing is overproduced, nothing sits in a box for a season, and the pair you receive was made for you.
If your size is on the shelf it's marked ready to ship and goes out within a few days. If a style can't be made at the moment, usually because a sole has run out, the page says so.
Like a style but in another leather or colour? Ask. We have the leather.
Delivery, collection and returns
We courier anywhere in South Africa, R120 a parcel and free on orders over R1,000. Once your pair leaves the factory, allow one to five working days, a little longer to outlying areas. Pay by card, EFT, or in three interest-free payments with PayJustNow.
Nearby? Choose Come and fetch them at checkout and collect your pair from the factory shop at 51 Lourens Street, Somerset West, any time the shop is open. There's no courier charge, and the coffee at Wild Peach is good.
Not right? Exchange or return within fourteen days of delivery, unworn. You pay the courier back to us. Sale pairs are exchange only.
Looking after real leather
Every pair is real leather, so no two are exactly alike. Small differences in grain and colour are the mark of the real thing, not a fault. Some leathers change colour over time. That is natural.
Clean them with a soft, dry cloth. For a stubborn mark, use a soft, damp cloth. Keep them away from water, and store them away from heat, damp and direct sunlight. Use a shoe polish that suits the leather.
Soles wear and straps stretch with years of use. When that happens, bring them back. We repair what we make.
Our factory shop is at 51 Lourens Street, Somerset West, across the courtyard from the house where every Phelan pair is made. The Wild Peach coffee shop is inside the shop.
Choose Come and fetch them at checkout. We'll email you when your pair is ready, and you can come in any time the shop is open. Whoever's in the shop will show you where it was made, if you'd like to see. Then have a coffee, sit in the garden for a while, and take your shoes home yourself. There's no courier charge.
Call 021 852 4516 or email shop@phelan.co.za. More about visiting us opens in a new tab, so this page stays put.
Shoes have to fit. If a pair isn't right, send it back or bring it back, and we'll put it right.
If the size or the style isn't right
- Tell us within fourteen days of the pair arriving: call the factory shop on 021 852 4516 or email shop@phelan.co.za, with your order number.
- Send the pair back unworn and in its box. Try it on indoors, on a carpet.
- Choose another size, another style, or your money back.
- The courier back to us is for your account, and so is the courier for a replacement pair. Nearby? Bring the pair to the factory shop instead.
We refund the card or account you paid with, within ten days of the pair reaching us. The delivery charge on the first order isn't refunded, unless the mistake was ours or the law says otherwise. A replacement that has to be made for you takes as long as the first pair did.
If something is wrong with the pair
If we sent the wrong pair, or there's a fault in the leather, the stitching or the sole, tell us and send a photo. We pay the courier, and you choose: we repair it, replace it or refund you. That holds for six months from the day the pair arrives. If we repair a pair and the fault comes back within three months, we replace it or refund you.
Wear isn't a fault. Nor are the grain and small marks that come with real leather.
Good to know
- Made differently for you. If we made a pair in a leather or colour you asked for, or changed it to fit you, we can't take it back because you've changed your mind. A fault is still a fault, and we put it right.
- Bought on sale. We exchange the pair for another size or style, but don't refund it.
- Worn. A pair that comes back worn can't be exchanged or refunded. We send it back to you.
What the law gives you
All of this is on top of your rights, not instead of them. If you ordered online, you can cancel within seven days of the pair arriving, for any reason, and be refunded. You pay only the courier back to us. That is section 44 of the Electronic Communications and Transactions Act, and it covers sale pairs too. The six months on faults is section 56 of the Consumer Protection Act.
Where to send them
Phelan Footwear, 51 Lourens Street, Somerset West, 7130. Or bring them in: Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm, and Saturday, 8am to 1pm.
And years from now, when a sole wears through or a strap stretches, bring the pair back. We repair what we make.

Your Phelan shoes are real leather. Look after them and they last for years. Here is how.
Every pair
- Some leathers change colour over time. That is natural.
- Store them away from heat, damp and direct sunlight.
- Keep them clear of rough surfaces, chemicals, cleaning products, oils and solvents.
- Clean them with a soft, dry cloth.
- For a stubborn mark, use a soft, damp cloth.
- Keep them away from water.
- Use a shoe polish that suits the leather.
Metallic leather
- Wipe with a soft, damp cloth.
- Keep it away from rough surfaces.
Patent leather
- Wipe with a soft, damp cloth. Nothing abrasive.
- Then rub with a soft, dry cloth to bring back the shine.
Your Phelan shoes are made for walking. Wear them often.
We repair what we make. When a pair needs it, bring it back to the factory shop.
Come for coffee. Leave in new sandals.
The factory shop is across the courtyard from the house, with the Wild Peach coffee shop inside it. The full range is there, including pairs that never make it online. Sit with a coffee, try on whatever you like, and ask to see where it was made. If you've ordered online and you're nearby, come and fetch your pair instead of having it couriered. People tell us it's the best part.
